The German adjective fertig is especially interesting because of its slang usages. In standard usage, fertig is usually translated as "finished," "ready," or "done":

Nun brauche ich meinen fertigen Teig nur noch in die Form füllen.

Now I just have to fill my finished batter into the mold.

But in its slang usages, fertig takes on different meanings. The phrase fix und fertig, for example, means to be worn out or exhausted:

Wir sind fix und fertig, hä?

We are worn out, huh?

The phrase fertig machen, which until the German language reform of 1996 was the freestanding verb fertigmachen, means “to get ready” or "to prepare" in its standard usage:

But in its slang usage, fertig machen has a range of meanings, from exhausting oneself all the way to the threat of physical violence:

Das macht mich fertig.

It's getting me down.

However, erst is also used as an adverb to express that something didn't occur or will not occur until a particular moment. There isn't a precise English translation for this, but usually a phrase with "only" or "not until" is used. 

Also werden wir uns erst nächste Woche Montag entscheiden.

So, we won't decide until Monday of next week.

One false friend to keep in mind is the adverb zunächst. Unlike als Nächstes, this word has nothing to do with "next" and actually also means "first" or "initially."

you generally first go to the doctor.

Generally, all of these can be described as groß or klein. Just make sure you have the correct declension. The same is the case for der Teller – we can say ein großer Teller or ein kleiner Teller.

... and then you not only have something colorful on the plate,

sondern es schmeckt hoffentlich auch den kleinen Feinschmeckern.

but, hopefully, it'll even taste good to the little gourmets.

Here you can see the way different types of bowls are described. Generally, eine Schüssel will be a larger bowl, even a serving or mixing bowl, while eine Schale is smaller and intended for an individual. If it's very small, you can also say ein Schälchen.

Wir schütten den Teig in eine Schüssel oder in einen Suppenteller.

We'll pour the batter into a bowl or into a soup plate.
