In last week's lesson, we looked at compound nouns that employ the noun das Zeug. But it doesn't stop there.

In addition to dozens of nouns with the -zeug ending, there are others that use it as a root. One common noun is das Zeugnis, which can refer to a report, a (school) certificate, or a testament/testimony. 

Das ist beim Stand der Dinge heute das älteste authentische Zeugnis für Christentum.

This is, as things stand today, the oldest authentic testimony of Christianity.

The word der Zeuge or die Zeugin means "the witness."

Other words include das Erzeugnis ("the product"), der Erzeuger / die Erzeugerin ("the producer," "the creator," "the procreator"), and das Zeughaus ("the armory").

Verbs include zeugen and erzeugen. The verb zeugen is used to describe procreation, and also for testifying or bearing evidence in a formal or abstract sense. When it comes to bearing witness or testifying to something specific, the verb bezeugen may be used. The verb erzeugen, on the other hand, is used for the production, creation, or generation of something other than humans or animals. 

Wehranlagen zeugen von der kriegerischen Vergangenheit.

Fortifications testify to its war-torn past.

Today's newsletter will look at a rather advanced topic: the difference between sich weigern and verweigern. The verb verweigern ("to refuse") was mentioned briefly in our newsletter "Accepting, confirming, declining, and rejecting." But when do we use the reflexive verb sich weigern?

As it turns out, the verb sich weigern will generally be followed by a verb in the infinitive. It is a matter of refusing to do something.

Ich rede mit der Unfallversicherung, und wenn die sich tatsächlich weigern sollten zu zahlen, dann erstatte ich Ihnen den Betrag aus der Firmenkasse.

I'll talk with the insurance company and, if they in fact should refuse to pay, then I'll pay you the amount from the company's coffers.

The verb verweigern, on the other hand, will generally be used with a noun, even if this noun actually refers to action:

Darf die Müllabfuhr wegen falscher Mülltrennung den Abtransport verweigern?

Is the garbage collection service allowed to refuse transport due to incorrect trash separation?

Die Müllabfuhr verweigert die Dienstleistung wegen Vermüllung, also falscher Mülltrennung.

The garbage collection service refuses to continue service because of littering, that is, improper trash separation.

Both of these verbs are quite strong and typically used in more formal or legal contexts, such as refusing a request or denying to do something one must do. A verb like ablehnen can be used when someone declines an offer, whereas verweigern and sich weigern generally indicate that action is actually required.

Sometimes it's good to just set the record straight, and with that intention, let's take a look at zählen and zahlen. Short and sweet: zählen is "to count," and zahlen is "to pay."

Although you might be able to come up with a mnemonic device that you find helpful, simply remembering that Ich möchte zahlen means "I would like to pay" may be enough to help you sort it out. At the same time, you might still find that you get flustered mid-sentence trying to remember which verb is correct. It doesn't help that the noun die Zahlen means the "the numbers." It is the plural version of the noun die Zahl:

Der Adventskalender hat vierundzwanzig Türen, und auf jeder steht eine Zahl.

The Advent calendar has twenty-four doors, and each one has a number on it.

In English, "to count" can also mean "to matter." Zählen is also used to mean "to count," "to count as" or "to number among." Take a look at these examples: 

Beim Blocken zählt jede Sekunde.

When blocking, every second counts.

She is counted among Germany's most successful singers.

And one final note: you probably have wondered what the difference is between zahlen  and bezahlen. The truth is that they are often interchangeable, but there are some instances where zahlen is wrong. For example, when you speak about paying a person for a service, you would generally use bezahlen and not zahlen.
