You know the German word frei, but this is rarely used to describe the price of items or services. However, there are many words for this.

You can talk about something being kostenfrei, which is essentially synonymous with kostenlos. 

Der Eintritt ist für die Kinder kostenfrei.

The admission is free for children.

The word umsonst has two different meanings. It can be translated as "free of charge," but also as "without reason" or "in vain." 

Dass Sie nicht denken, dass in Berlin dann alles umsonst ist.

So that you don't then think that everything is free in Berlin.

Another word that means "without money," "unpaid," or "free of charge" is unentgeltlich, which is generally used in writing or more formal contexts.

The adverbs ansonsten and sonst in German are most often found in contexts where they can be translated as "else" or "otherwise." You will find that they are generally quite interchangeable, though sonst has a wider range of applications and is used more often in casual conversation.

The last sentence is an example in which ansonsten would sound quite odd due to the colloquial nature of the sentence. 

More importantly, you don't want to confuse ansonsten and sonst with the adjective umsonst, which can mean "for free," "for nothing," or "without reason," depending on the context. Take a look: 

Dass Sie nicht denken, dass in Berlin dann alles umsonst ist.

So that you don't think that in Berlin then everything is free.

Some of the most practical German words that you can use immediately upon arrival in a German-speaking country (don't forget that German is spoken in Austria and Switzerland too!) are related to ordering food. When you first enter a restaurant, the waitstaff may invite you to take a seat:

Note that another word for menu is das Menü, and sometimes Speisekarte is shortened simply to die Karte. When you are ready to order, you may inform the waitstaff:

Wir würden gerne bestellen, bitte.

We would like to order, please.

Kichererbsenbuletten sind das, ist auch vegetarisch, rein vegan ist das... ohne tierische Produkte.

Then there are several ways you can express your order to the waitstaff:

And when you are ready to pay, you can simply say bezahlen, bitte or die Rechnung, bitte. If you wish to pay with a credit card, you may ask:
