The German word for a rule is die Regel. This feminine noun is less official than a law (das Gesetz) and is at the root of a number of words related to how things are or should be done.
The verb sich halten an is used with both die Regel and das Gesetz.
Sie nennt Regeln, an die sich alle Bewohner und Bewohnerinnen halten müssen.
