You know the German word frei, but this is rarely used to describe the price of items or services. However, there are many words for this.

You can talk about something being kostenfrei, which is essentially synonymous with kostenlos. 

Der Eintritt ist für die Kinder kostenfrei.

The admission is free for children.

The word umsonst has two different meanings. It can be translated as "free of charge," but also as "without reason" or "in vain."

Another word that means "without money," "unpaid," or "free of charge" is unentgeltlich, which is generally used in writing or more formal contexts.

In previous lessons, we've examined adjectives ending with -bar and adjectives with un- and -los. This week, we'l look at the ending -sam. The nice thing about adjectives, as you may remember, is that the related adverb is often the exact same word rather than having a different suffix.

The word sparsam is a positive adjective related to trying to save money, and could also be translated as "frugal" or "thrifty." The word geizig is less flattering, and essentially means "stingy." 

Das ist sehr sparsam!

This is very economical!

Here are a few more common adjectives ending with -sam. The first two may be known to you through the related verbs raten ("to advise”) and unterhalten ("to entertain").

While der Erzieher / die Erzieherin refers to educators working with any age level, it is der Lehrer / die Lehrerin that you will find in compound nouns like die Klavierlehrerin, der Yogalehrer, etc. The English word "trainer" is borrowed in German, and means both coach and trainer.

At some point while learning German, it may have dawned on you that there isn't exactly a German equivalent for the adjective "fun." There is, of course, the noun der Spaß, which is used to describe how someone can "have fun" (Spaß haben) or something can "be fun" (Spaß machen):

Ich glaube, auch die Erwachsenen haben Spaß an dem Film.

I think adults also have fun with this film.

The adjective spaßig does exist, but is more specific, meaning that something is either "merry" or "celebratory," or "jocular" or "playful." Es hat Spaß gemacht is therefore not really the same thing as Es war spaßig. 

Und spaßig ging es auch in der Festhalle weiter.

In terms of adjectives, however, there are a few other contenders. The adjective lustig can mean either "funny" or "fun" depending on the context.

Es ist einfach lustig und immer wieder da zwischendurch kommt trotzdem wieder ein Fund.

It's just fun, and time and time again in between, another find is still made.
