After Pascal sells the apartment, Lilly begins to do her own research on how to move to East Germany and be with her aunt.

Lilly is offered a place in a foster family, but can only think about moving in with her aunt Lena in East Germany.

Lilly and Pascal make it across the border with two slightly harrowing moments. First, they locate the place where Lilly's parents used to meet up.

Following the directions her mother gave her before she died, Lilly finds the house where her aunt lives. Unfortunately, things don't go as she had hoped.

When the police come to check if Lilly is at their house, Lena and her husband learn of Lilly's escape into the East. But where is Lilly now?

After Lena's son Till finds Lilly and brings her up to the apartment, she quickly realizes that things will not be nearly as simple as she had imagined.

Lilly realizes that she has made things very complicated for Lena and her family. Lena's husband Rolf asks an old friend for a favor.

Rolf and Lena discuss how Lilly could possibly stay in the GDR. In the morning, Lena tries to break the tension that has settled in their household.

Lilly learns that it is because of her mother's escape to West Germany that Lena had to stop teaching school. Katrin, certain that Lilly will be send back to the West, continues to be mean to her.

Kathrin continues to reject Lilly's presence in their home, while Lilly learns that her Uncle Rolf has taken trips to the West without ever contacting her.

To her great disappointment, Lilly only gets a visitor's pass rather than a visa. She remains optimistic about life in the GDR even as she learns more about the reality of living there.

Lilly finally makes Katrin talk to her, and Lena tells them about Lilly's mother's escape to the West.

More about the family's history is revealed, and Lilly prepares to go back to the West. When she boards the train, Till gives her a 1989 calendar, which means it won't be long before Lilly can live with them.
