As the train continues its course towards Berlin, the band of musicians perform a song about yearning for freedom, which contrasts with the security checks of East Germans returning from the West.

The first segment introduces us to the main characters who, aboard the train from Munich to East Berlin on August 13, 1961, will face a difficult decision: freedom or home.

After the success of the internationally acclaimed Threepenny Opera, the film industry sets its sights on creating a film version. Nina and her colleague Daniel ask Mirko whether he has contacted the criminal investigation department as promised. Harry Möller tells her colleague about the date she went on the previous evening, and Hannes overhears his chief officer, Frau Küppers, with whom he is secretly in love, talking about her dreams...

Part two of "Der gute Bulle" ("The Good Cop") begins with Dirk Matthies reflecting on everything that has happened so far. Dirk tries to get in touch with Elias, while Nina and Daniel decide to question Mirko.

Mr. Krabbe gives his boss a teddy bear, and Dirk gives Paul some friendly advice on letting go...

The young suspect is spotted riding a woman's bike around town, so the patrol team sets out in pursuit, as do the homicide investigators. It's clear that the two teams really don't get along.

Luis can't stop thinking about the case. In the morning, he has found the solution... In the meantime, father and daughter set about retrieving the loot from the ferry.

In this segment, we find out that the thieves are in a very desperate situation. Meanwhile, Nina is heartbroken, and Max doesn't know how to face the fact that she's leaving town. Additionally, Jessi is annoyed with Luis, who is now spending all his time with Ceyda, the girl from the ferry.

Luis wants to catch the suspected thief, but his mother prevents him from doing so. Nina is upset by Max's behavior and Max's grandma tries to comfort her. Jada turns up at Jessi's family's home and has a proposal...

As a train passenger, you can usually sit back and relax on the 791 kilometers (492 miles) of track between Munich in the south and Hamburg in the north. Not so on this evening, when a storm brings train services to a standstill and forces many travelers to rethink their plans. Four completely different personalities find themselves sharing a cab...
